Technologies and potential applications
DC power grids for increased sustainability
Today, both end devices in household environments and loads in industrial applications are supplied with direct current. Introducing direct current-based smart grids will make maximum utilization of the available energy possible in the future.
The networking of sectors within the DC grid enables energy recovery, whereby the energy generated by a system through braking can be recovered and returned to the grid as electrical current. Surpluses produced are collected in energy storage systems and fed back into the grid when necessary. This can reduce both the peak load and the load on the public grid.
Advantages of a DC grid:
• Increased energy efficiency through energy recovery and reduced conversion losses, as well as the use of renewable energy and energy storage systems
• Resource optimization through up to 55 % less copper consumption, reduced equipment costs, and smaller footprints
• Avoidance of production downtimes due to failures in the supply network
• Basis for the intelligent control of energy flows
The advantages of sector coupling:
• Sustainable power supply
• Resource-efficient production
• Comprehensive optimization for climate protection
• Storage of regenerative energy
• Consistent data and information flows

Power electronics for reliable supply solutions
If DC grids are supplied from the public AC grid, active AC / DC supply devices are recommended. With their bidirectionality and the wide range of international grid feed-in certifications, these devices also enable the feedback of excess energy into the public grid.
For example, the TRIO POWER AC / DC power module with bidirectional power conversion can be used for this. The scalability of the system means that it can be used in a wide range of applications up to the megawatt range. Our CHARX power power modules in the 19 " format make the integration of DC sectors, such as battery storage systems, into the DC power grid, very easy with their wide DC input and output range.
Our PLCnext control platform enables the flexible configuration of individual power modules. As a result, the DC sectors can be combined to form a comprehensive grid management system.
