How the Industrial Internet
of Things Will Support
Future Supply Chains
ARC analysts Steve Banker and Sid Snitkin recently had a thoughtprovoking discussion on the future of the Industrial Internet of Things with
Mark Morley, Director of Industry Marketing for Manufacturing at OpenText.
Two key ideas emerged from our conversation:
•
The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is
not fully mature and new applications for
IIoT continue to emerge. OpenText, for
example, could potentially support more
automated vendor managed inventory
processes that extend further across the
order-to-cash process.
•
IIoT projects often become Big Data projects. Here, distributing more intelligence
down to the device level could help prevent database bloat. Similarly, putting
more process intelligence down at the
device level could lead to a leaner and
more streamlined corporate application
environment. But these decisions are not
clear-cut. There are pros and cons associated with both distributing or centralizing
IIoT intelligence and data.
